Customs Procedures and Travel Information

Here is some additional information for competitors and others going to Botswana for the Toyota 1000 Desert Race:

The Botswana Customs and Excise Department has requested that all competitors, service crews, media, etc. entering Botswana for the Toyota 1000 Desert Race draw up a list of items that are being brought into the country e.g. motor vehicles (including chassis and engine numbers), spares, tyres, lubricants, cameras (including serial numbers), etc. Please note: all tyres, new and used, must be returned to South Africa.

Download the SARS Registration of Goods for Re-importation form DA65 here

The list must include your name, address and contact details on the top, and should be completed in triplicate so that one can be handed in at each border control post (South Africa and Botswana) and the other retained by you.

Please declare money in your possession. Do not hide it. If it is found hidden and not declared it will be confiscated. Please note: Botswana only allows the equivalent of P10,000 in cash per person. Should you require more, the balance must be in traveller's cheques.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TAKE FIREARMS INTO BOTSWANA!

The border post at Tlokweng, is aware of your pending arrival. There is a section which deals with persons involved in the Toyota 1000 Desert Race.

Passports

Your passport must be valid for a minimum of three months from your date of return to South Africa and must have at least two blank pages.

Visas

If, because of your nationality, you require a visa, please note that these are not available from the Botswana border posts and have to be applied for beforehand from the relevant embassy. Check here to see the list of countries whose citizens do require visas and those who do not require visas.
